Everybody loves dessert, ice cream and chocolate and cake and yes we too! Yummy! And while we are trying as much as we could not to let Mikael eat the cake that we bake or the chocolate, but we think he is already know where to find those things, of course in the refrigerator.

But taking too much sugar is not a good idea after all. Excess sugar in our body only create health problems and add weight too.  Often child with strong interest on sweet things will eventually develop sweet tooth and that is not good.

There are two types of sugar in our food, natural sugar and added sugar. Natural sugar is the sugar found in whole, unprocessed foods, such as milk, fruit, vegetables and some grains. The most common natural sugars are fructose, which is found in fruit, and lactose, which is found in milk products.

Added sugar is the sugar added to processed food and drinks while they are being made, as well as sugar you may add to your food at home. So the coarse sugar that we use at home is common name for added sugar. The sources of added sugars are also made from natural ingredient such as plant etc.  Hence it is not about whether the source of sugar is natural or not.  But it is about the overall excessive sugar intake diet for your child is no good.

So when we want to feed them with something that we buy from store, please take some time to scan the label on the food and see how many grams of sugar they put. Sometimes they didn’t declare the sugar but you still can take a look at carbohydrate content and that reflects the amount of sugar inside the particular food.

I still remember the awareness campaign of taking just one teaspoon of sugar for a cup of tea by Ministry of Health. The “Satu Sudu Gula Sudah Mencukupi” campaing. The advertisement is everywhere and they urge people to put just small amount of sugar in food and drinks. In Finland for example, people take tea without any sugar at all and even for their favourite coffee. So that’s why most of them are thin and lean like my friends Aga and Miko.

So we are trying as much as we can to avoid taking lots of sugar. As for Mikael, no big chunk of chocolate yet but more cereal with milk will do fine.

So how about you guys? What do you do to prevent too much sugar intake for you and your child? Please share with us and write some comments okay! ;)

    Salam kak Ijan..

    Salam ijan,
Lama jugak tak singgah sini, kadang tu bila masuk ‘tersangkut sangkut’, tak tau kenapa.

Gula…dari dulu mmg dah kurang, nescafe makcik letak gula, once or twice only per day, my tea goes without. Buat kek pun selalu mmg i use less than what is stated in recipe. Tapi makanan lain yg kita consume tu mostly mmg ada sugar.

    • Salam Makcik,
Tak tahu pula kenapa tersangkut sangkut bila makcik try access sini. hmmm :(
Bukan yg dlm minuman aje yg kita kena control kan. Memang most of the things that we eat selalunya memang banyak juga gula. not to mention other carbohydrates :)

    Assalamualaikum akak,

Salam kenal. baru jenguk sini dr blog akak2 yg lain ^^

It’s hard to reduce sugar intake! i tried to reduce the amount of dessert i make to once per week (it’s hard! as i love baking cakes et al). drinks a LOT of plain water. tried not to let my hubby makes his own drinks (he put 3 scoops of milo in 1 mug! plus xtra creamer! adoiii..).

some of my dietitian friends bring palsweet (artificial sugar) everywhere. so out site, when they are buying drinks, can always asked for a no-sugar one =)

    • Waalaikumsalam,
      Terima kasih sudi tinggalkan komen.
I know how hard it is not to bake or make your sweet dessert as much as you like. I tried the same too. not so much cakes etc. :)
Never tried artificial sugar. Maybe it’s also helpful :)

    • That’s great if you can still control them not to take too much sugar. I controlled my baking frequency to avoid extra sugar :)

Mikael is just fine. He’s becoming more active now. And more ideas about everything :D

ijan..my boy is hyper-active..just 1 candy bar and in 5 minutes hyper behavioral. ADHD. but it eventually phased out from him. try giving natural sugar in juices and vegetables. hyper active kids sometimes have problems focusing in class later on. analyzing more on all info instead of just absorbing. but they are very detailed and meticulous with things too. patience is an absolute must virtue. counseling above punishments. but usually they would develop into fast thinkers & active sports later on :) so it is actually a bonus ijan. take care kat sana tau :)
