Before the 13 teaspoon sugar story… ;)

Have you ever watched Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution on TV or internet? I’m very impressed with the TV program brought by the English Top Chef, Jamie Oliver. His spirit, truthfulness and enthusiasm were just amazing and I would say very inspiring. He was in the show trying to fight over unhealthy food dilemma and obvious problems of obesity among many people in Huntington, West Virginia USA. Huntington has been statistically reported as one of the unhealthiest cities in the country or maybe in the world?

The story of one beautiful young lady really broke my heart when she was in tears, telling that she might just have a couple of more years left to be in this world. Her obesity problems started when she was 2 years old and ever since, she was carrying many other obesity related problems including kidney complication. If you could watch her, looking into her eyes and trying to understand how much she has been through, I believe you couldn’t stop yourself from crying. Bayang kan kita atau anak kita di tempat dia… hebat sungguh dugaan buat dia :(

Very much inspired from the show, made me realized how unhealthy processed foods could be. How much cholesterol and added sugar it may contains. As much as it brings us comfort and easy, it may also harm us in many other ways. Therefore, I started to think about myself, my family and most importantly my lovely little Mikael.

Now to the sugar topic… :)

Still remember about our ‘A Little Secret about Sugar’ post? We were so excited to read comments from everybody who kindly shared their own experiences about sugar and how to control it. Many many thanks to all. Mmuahh!

Again, I would like to share some more information which I think many of us never realized before. I was currently reading about basic nutritional information in children’s milk powder and come across news that really shocked me a lot. Can you imagine, our children might be consuming up to 13 teaspoon of added sugar everyday in their milk intake???

Biar betulll? banyaknye added sugar dalam milk powder. This is for me really heartbreaking to perceive :(

As much as milk is crucial for children’s nutrition and calcium sources, that amount of sugar was definitely a big NO NO for anybody especially for growing up children. Kawan2 semua mestilah berhati-hati when buying milk powder.  The manufacturer might not be mentioning the real sugar amount on the label, but be careful… it might be represented in the total carbohydrate amount which also reflects the sugar level. Sadly to mention, excessive added sugars have been found in many growing up milk powders in Malaysia :(

Ohohoh… hati2 semua. Not only we might see some hyperactive extra ‘stunt’ actions by our children, they might also experience bad teeth cavities due to excessive sugar intake. Mikael is sometimes giving us bad times when he started to ‘kungfu’ too much at home. Maybe I should start tasting his milk soon :D

At some serious extend, excessive sugar intake may lead to various unwanted complications like obesity and also obesity related diseases such as cardiovascular, diabetic, metabolic syndrome, cancers and many more. This reminded me so much to the young lady in Jamie’s program L

Bear in mind that it is very important to always check the sugar level in your children’s growing up milk powder before buying any. Here are some common names of added sugar which is unnecessary for our children: Corn Syrup Solid, Sucrose & Glucose Syrup Solid.

I hope I’ve shared some valuable information here for us and for our future generations. I very much hope that I could also spread this information to other families and friends, telling them how much it means to have non added sugar products to our children. Maybe you could do your part too… simply by choosing children growing up milk with no added sugars in the future okay!

Let’s show our children how much we love them by keeping them happy and healthy…

    • Kalau fully breast feed lagi baguskan… dan kalau beli yg tanpa perisa tu pun rasanya good choice jugak. at least kita boleh kontrol kandungan gula yg kite beri pada anak2… :)

    • Salam Soo Hae Daa,
Ye..betul.harap2 lebih ramai yang peka dengan kandungan gula ni… kesian pada baby kalau kita bagi makanan yang tak sesuai dengan usia diorang yg masih kecik.

Sama2… time kasih jugak kat Soo yang selalu singgah umah kak ijan ni.hehe :)

    Salam Ijan,
a very good post here…memang menjadi isu tentang kandungan gula di dalam growing up milk… babies & toddlers sepatutnya tak didedahkan dengan makanan yg mengandungi gula/garam pada tahun² pertama tumbesaran mereka terutamanya bayi di bawah 1 tahun.

hari tu jumpa paeds at hospital putrajaya. ask her about this matter. and she replied basically susu nie sama jerk. more macam advertistment sahaja. since pakar dah kata camtu we decided to stay with Adwa’s current milk. by the way kalau anak agak aktif maybe sugar tu dia boleh guna as energy kot. we tried anmum tp he’s still energetic as ever.

  9. cinta says:

Biasanya kita kurang sedar tentang kandungan gula dalam susu sebab mereka guna terms-terms seperti sukrosa, sirap jagung.

selepas read ur blog, i lagi confuse. Kan not only sugar level in saya punya anak milk penting saja. memang kena watch her overall diet jugak. Dan 13 spoons of sugar doesn’t sound very right lah. Imagine kalau the pack of milk powder can be consumed for 1 month, then the sugar contain will be 30x13spoons=390spoons!! i wonder how big the pack to contain spoon-spoon yang banyak sangat plus many other ingredients in the milk powder, really can’t imagine.,,,,

I was quite shocked when i read your article. I just found out about this added sugar issue. I mean my 4 year old’s health i at stake here! Scary! that’s why i’ve been reading up on the issue – cause so far Anmum is the only one to have no added sugar in its milk. but I also found some contrasting information – first of all the TVC – Health Ministry says that the 40% sugar in other milk brands is not true and also the Nutrition Society of Msia has been talking about it too saying that sugar cannot be used as the only excuse of obseity. Hmm…think whatever it is have to practice everything in moderation…….

  12. What a great site! Love the photography and you write very well. Off to read more posts!

And ps…I love Jamie, too. He rocks.
