Remember when I wrote about added sugars in children’s milk before? You can read it here, here, and here.
I have been trying to search for more information about this topic as it seems to bother me quite much lately. It was also devastating to recently know that Malaysia ranks the first for highest obesity problems among ASEAN countries
Read more about it here.
Interestingly, I came across Key Opinion Leader’s (KOL) materials which I think pretty good to be shared here. It is about health and risk of our children.
KOL is Key Opinion Leaders which generally belongs to a specific area of expertise, such as oncology, cardiology, diabetes, or sometimes do specialized work in very niche therapeutic areas such as Colorectal Cancer (CRC), Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). Some KOLs also belong to administration, the Food & Drugs Administration or EMEA.
Hmmm, what’s so special about KOL in relation to the sugar topic?
~ They were actually here in Malaysia at an independent scientific symposium for leading Malaysian healthcare professionals, academics and Government officials on added sugars in children’s diets. At this symposium they actually talked about the amount of added sugars in children’s milk – they say it is too high!! … and parents should look for an option with no added sugars as a healthier choice
I think that is something really forthcoming, isn’t it? At least it seems like there are increasing awareness about the importance of this issue.
We all know that children growing up milk powder has been specially formulated to provide the essential nutrients for growing up children – i.e. brain & physical development, which it contains more nutrition than a glass of fresh milk. They are also formulated to provide balanced energy for child. However, what is not needed in children growing up milk is the excessive sugars being added in.
Excessive sugar, added sugar, corn syrup solids, glucose syrup solids and sucrose may finally lead to obesity among the children. The affects varies from physical, social and also emotional well-being of your child. Which kite semua tak mahu kan?
I’d like to share some compelling information here about related obesity problems in children. At least it can serve as a reminder for us…
Obesity in childhood may result in serious medical problems in childhood such as:
- type 2 diabetes
- high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol
- metabolic syndrome: a number of conditions that are all associated with high blood insulin levels including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure
- liver disease
- bone and joint problems
- respiratory problems such as asthma
- sleep disorders such as difficulty breathing while asleep (sleep apnea)
- earlier than normal puberty or menstruation
- eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia
- skin infections due to moisture from sweat being trapped in skin folds
- fatigue
Overweight or obesity in childhood can also result in serious psychological difficulties.
Overweight or obese children:
- are more likely to be teased and bullied
- are more likely to bully others
- may have poor self-esteem and may feel socially isolated
- may be at increased risk for depression
- may have poorer social skills
- may have high stress and anxiety
- may have behaviour and/or learning problems as a result of psychological difficulties related to childhood obesity

I was attracted by the saying from Jamie Oliver related to his Food Revolution tv program. He said, “If you have flavored milk, that’s candy”. In LA, they may take actions to ban chocolate milk because of the added sugar
(Here, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/05/09/ap/business/main20061008.shtml). That shows how serious they are to tackle the problem.
What I’m trying to say here is, we should also do our part by making an informed decision about our children’s growing up milk by checking the label. Please notice that carbohydrate of more than 12g per serve definitely contains ADDED SUGARS!

Salam Ijan,
Thank you for sharing this..I was aware with this issue, but the problem is with the kid. He didn’t like the taste of other milk except his Enfagrow’s..We fed him since he’s 3 months old. We tried to eliminate those flavored milks, and focus on fresh milk instead. Sometimes he take it, sometimes not.
Since Adam still hanging onto his Enfagrow’s, we, on the other hand, try to eliminate his sweet cravings. No cookies, no candies, no flavored yogurts, except during weekend.. Hopefully, this could reduce his sugar intake. The least we could do for time being..Again, thank you for sharing this..
Salam RC,
You’re very welcome. I try to do the same too. Fortunately here they really take care about sugar quantities in children’s milk. But of course since we are coming back to Msia soon, I need to figure out the best milk choice for him from now. Hopefully we all are able to provide the best for our children.

This is a great sharing on the excessive intake of sugar and obesity. These are also closely linked to hypertension. If you have the opportunity please do also share on topic such as natural high blood pressure cures that will benefit many people.
